- Over $90,000 in the scholarship fund, with 30 or more recipients in an average year; individual amounts depend on submission quality and volume. At least one $5,000 Dr. William C. Johnson scholarship is awarded each year.
- Deadline
- Fall round: September 28-October 13, 2026. Winter round: December 7, 2026-January 12, 2027. Award announcement May 3, 2027. No time zone is stated.
- How to apply
- Through AwardSpring, submit a critical analytical essay of at most 850 words including quotations/references, double-spaced in 12-point font with MLA documentation, as an anonymous PDF labeled for the prompt. Upload one accessible MOV/MP4 video of 1-2 minutes and strictly under two minutes answering both supplementary questions. Complete demographic questions and agree to provide a recipient report/photos. Students may enter either or both rounds; the higher-scoring essay is used.

- Who can apply
- Current high-school seniors who are NEHS student members at an active chapter and plan to attend an accredited two-year college or four-year university, anywhere in the world. Any major is allowed.
- Good to know
- Fall text: Accountable by Dashka Slater. Winter text: The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. Awards are paid directly to the institution in late summer. NEHS can hold an award for a one-year college-entry deferral; awards not accepted within one year are forfeited.
